052303 - Polarized Moon

One of the functions of a polarizing filter is to darken a blue sky. However, this phenomenon happens only within a 30-degree angle of the sky, and at right- angle to the position of the sun. When the moon is in half-phase, it is positioned at right-angle to the sun, directly where maximum polarization occurs. Taken at the 17mm end of the zoom lens, the band of maximum polarization is easily seen.

The image was shot with a Nikon F3 and 17-35mm f/2.8 lens on Ektachrome Plus 100.
