060409 - Ocean Sunset


The sun sets on the ocean from Thanksgiving to the end of January as viewed from the Old Saybrook Town Beach on Rt. 154. If there's no wind it's a great opportunity to use very long telephoto lenses; in this case the converted Celestron 8 telescope. I call the lens R2 because it resembles R2D2 from the Star Wars movies. Care must be taken when shooting the sun with long lenses. The rule of thumb is: if you can look at the sun without squinting, then it's safe to view it through a telephoto lens. If not, DON'T!

The image was shot with a Nikon F4 and 2000mm f/11 lens on Ektachrome Plus 100.
