121231_016 - Hartford - First Night


First Night fireworks happen at 6pm and Midnight. We usually shoot the 6pm display because the temperature is a little warmer than at midnight. This year it was 24 degrees with a slight breeze, making it almost tolerable. This shot was taken from the steps of the State Library building on Capitol Avenue across from the State Capitol building.

The aperture was set to f/11 and ISO 100 for the fireworks and the shutter speed to 5 seconds for exposure of the gold dome; daylight color balance. As soon as I heard the 'thump' of the firework leaving the tube, I pressed the remote cable release button and hoped for the best.

The image was shot with a Nikon D800 and 70-200/2.8 lens at ISO 100.
