When the full moon rises a little before the sun sets, the timing causes the moon to position itself in the blue-purple area of the sky called the Earth's Shadow. This takes place about 10 minutes after the sun sets. The darker blue background contrasts nicely with the moon and I was able to capture the yellow moon without over-exposing the highlights. As a bonus, I captured the moon's reflection in the low tide waters.

The image was captured with a Nikon D800, 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6, ISO 800, Gitzo tripod.
